(More customer reviews)If any of you have ever taken a train at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) to points north on a weekday, you have probably seen the mad rush of commuters, a seething mass of men and women (and erstwhile children) moving all in the same direction, and likely carrying you with them - hopefully to the platform where you will board your train.
In such chaos, things can go terribly wrong. My case is one of these.
My ticket clutched tightly in hand, my Czech canvas bag over my shoulder, I plunged into the northbound entrance of the station. I was quickly pressed against the back of an Indian man. Who was behind me, I will never know because we were all so tightly packed together that I could not turn around. My respiration was suddenly cut in half from the pressure. My view was limited to straight up into the dust-caked metal roof or straight ahead into the orange-black-green Madras check of the Indian's shirt. The smell was of sweat and curry, smoke and perhaps a note of clarified butter.
I suddenly found myself on the rails, in front of the arriving Deli Express.
Sometimes one doesn't have time to panic. From where the strength came, I'll never know but I suddenly found the wherewithal to pull myself up to the quay. I slung my 50 year-old legs 5 feet in the air and pushed my torso away from the edge. The train sped by, an inch from my head. My Czech bag lay under the crush of the screaming steel wheels.
My ticket still in hand, I had saved myself from the Deli Express.
I looked down at my bag and saw a small patch of melted fat seeping through the canvas. It was my breakfast-a sausage, egg and cheese "English" muffin sandwich, now nothing more than greasy muck. It could have been my head--crushed under the Deli Express.
